Bechuanaland Protectorate

1888 "Protectorate" (overprint only)
for possible use on the 1887 issue 1s to 10s denomination stamps

Sperati's proof of the "Protectorate" overprint shown below was purchased by Carl Walske from Yvonne Pochard de Sperati. He first reported the find in Sperati II (page 3) and illustrated it on plate A. The original negative is owned by the Paris Museum. No finished reproductions have been identified.

1. the top of the upper serif of the "P" bends slightly downward

2. there is a colored dot on the left side of the vertical of the "P"

3. the top of the first "t" flares outward.

4. the bottom center of the second "o" is weak (some prints only)

5. the right arm of the second "r" is detached

6. the tail of the third "t" is quite thin

7. letters are weak, showing white interiors, as in an underinked impression (probably not constant)
