Montserrat

1884 Issue 4d (two types)

Sperati's Montserrat reproductions were printed on genuine watermarked stamp paper with design removed and new design added. Used reproductions have forged cancels. These weer printed from two clichés, one for main design and the other for colony name and denomination. the listing below includes information corrected in Sperati II.

Type A

1. there is a nick on the underside of the top frameline above the "N," a diagonal weakness above the "S" and a clean break above and to the right of "T"

2. the horizontal line of shading of the background to the left and immediately opposite the top of the eye has been strongly redrawn

3.shading line in front of the forehead at midpoint has been strengthened

4. There are constant flaws in "MONTSERRAT" notably at the top right of the right stroke of the "N," the bottom stroke of the "E" and the right leg of the "A"


Type B (from retouched duty plate)

1. as type A but the characteristic defects in the lettering noted in section four above have been corrected
