News: New Addition (July 15, 2024):
In the June 2024 auction of David Feldman the below finished
reproduction of a France 5 Fr (Type A) was acquired for a client. On
page 32 of the Carl Walske and Robson Lowe, Sperati II
book, a
transcription of a Sperati letter specifically mentions that Sperati
made two copies of this stamp with "2387" in diamond of dots cancel of
Monaco. This would seem to be a third copy given its presumed source
(from the house of Sperati after his demise).
New Addition (September 2, 2022):
In the June 26, 2023 auction of David Feldman two lots
(#50475 and 50476) were unused and canceled examples of the Sperati
forgeries. These specimens, in conjunction with genuine used and genuine
unused examples of the 5Fr supplied by Steve Walske, allowed me the
opportunity to directly compare the the items. My conclusions based on
these new comparisons are summarized in the France 1869 5 Fr section on
page here.
New Addition (December 15, 2021):
I was recently able to secure a second example of a Sperati
reproduction cover bearing a tete-beche 1Fr Napoleon. All markings,
including the sender cachet, were printed by Sperati (cliches used for
each are shown in the BPA book). Click thumbnails for large images.
New Addition (January 29, 2024):
Peter Lambri reports new varieties of Cyprus 1903 9pi and 18pi
reproductions after studying three items recently acquired in a Swiss
auction. His notes are reported on Cyprus page
here.
In October 2019 I acquired the extraordinary
Dr. Carl Walske collection of Jean de Sperati reproduction stamps, covers, proofs and
negatives. The collection includes many items that were purchased
directly from the Sperati family that have not been seen previously. A
biography of Carl Walske is here.
I added numerous significant pieces before selling the Frajola
"Ultimate" collection. I intend to continue to update and expand this
website as new information is made known to me.
This site is dedicated primarily to the study of Sperati's "Philatelie d'Art" (actually superb reproductions)
and to a lesser extent to Sperati the man. The site has high resolution
(1200 dpi) images of virtually all of his
known reproductions. The important distinguishing characteristics of
each reproduction is briefly described. Additional types that originated when
Sperati used
different clichés to print the same basic design are also detailed.
This site has relied heavily on the both the the 1955 British
Philatelic Association publication, "The Work of Jean De Sperati"
referenced on this site simply as "Sperati I" as well as the 2001
Royal Philatelic Society of London publication, "The
Work of Jean de Sperati II, Including Previously Unlisted Forgeries"
by Robson Lowe and Carl Walske referenced here as "Sperati II."
I have made additions to the Walske
material and have posted a PDF file of the mounted collection
here. Additional pages of the BPA card proofs are linked from then
main country index page.
I hope this site will serve as a tribute to Dr. Carl Walske and will
further advance the study of Sperati's reproductions and their
manufacture. Additions and corrections are welcomed.
